Tropical Storm “Calvin” dumping heavy rain on Mexico, flash floods and mudslides expected

Tropical Depression 03E, located near the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, has intensified into a tropical storm, receiving the name Calvin at 21:00 UTC on June 12, 2017. Calvin is expected to cause flash floods and mudslides in the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz through midweek. This is the third tropical storm of the 2017 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season; average to date is 1.2.

At 21:00 UTC on June 12, the center of Tropical Storm "Calvin" was located about 110 km (68 miles) ESE of Puerto Angel, Mexico. The system has minimum estimated central pressure of 1005 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph). It is moving toward the west-northwest near 4 km/h (2 mph) and this general motion is expected to continue through the rest of the day. On the forecast track, the center will be near or over the coast of Oaxaca tonight or early Tuesday, June 13 (CDT), according to the NWS.

Little change in strength is expected until landfall, and weakening will occur after the center moves inland.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 95 km (60 miles) from the center.

More than 152.4 mm (6 inches) of rain have already fallen in Oaxaca and Salina Cruz in the Mexican state of Oaxaca and more than 127 mm (5 inches) in the city of Veracruz thus far.

Calvin is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 127 – 254 mm (5 to 10 inches) across the Mexican states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Guerrero, with possible isolated maximum amounts of 508 mm (20 inches), NWS warns. It is also forecast to produce total rainfall accumulations of 101.6 – 152.4 mm (4 to 6 inches) in the Mexican states of Tabasco and Veracruz, as well as in Guatemala.

These rains are expected to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
