Severe storms swept through San Antonio, Texas on Sunday night, February 19, 2017, damaging more than 150 homes and leaving 45 000 customers without power. The storms moved quickly but managed to produce significant damage.

The National Weather Service confirmed today that an EF-1 tornado of 168 km/h (105 mph) with a path length of 7.2 km (4.5 miles) touched down on Linda drive near the Quarry shopping center on the North Side. At least 30 homes were damaged, some of which were completely destroyed, but there were no major injuries reported in the area.

A second tornado hit the Northeast Side. It had a strength EF-0 with winds up to 112 km/h (70 mph) and a path length of 2.6 km (1.6 miles) between Windrest and Converse, east of I-35.

According to San Antonio Fire Department, only five San Antonio residents had minor injuries in the storms, even though more than 150 homes were damaged.

At the height of the storm, 45 000 homes were without power. On Monday, NWS confirmed 4 tornadoes touched town.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain continued to rattle eastern Texas Monday morning. Some of the storms could reach severe levels in eastern Texas and southern Louisiana later Monday, the Storm Prediction Center warned.

The showers and thunderstorms are expected to move east into the Lower/Mid-Mississippi valley by this afternoon, extending northward into the Tennessee valley, NWS said.

Warm Gulf air streaming northward along the front will help maintain higher precipitation for the Gulf states. Heavy rainfall may develop and increase the threat for flash flooding.
