Inside intriguing dust storm over Dori, Burkina Faso
Serge Bayala of the ACMAD-MESA Climate Services recorded this massive dust storm on May 23, 2016, at the periphery of a migrating low pressure cell arriving at Dori, the capital of Sahel Region, Burkina Faso.
The video starts as Bayala and Diasso Ulrich approach the storm and continues as the storm sweeps over them. At one point, the visibility drops down to zero.
The term "Sahel" is also associated with the ecoclimatic and biogeographic zone of transition in Africa between the Sahara to the north and the Sudanian Savanna to the south. The region is up to 1 000 km (620 miles) wide and spans the 5 400 km (3 360 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea.
