Fierce winds accompanied with thunderstorms uprooted around 1000 trees in Hanoi, Vietnam on Saturday, June 13. The falling trees crushed two people while driving their motorbikes on Minh Khai and Nguyen Du streets in Hai Ba Trung District while five others were injured by fallen trees, billboards and corrugated iron roofs.

139 houses were unroofed, 21 utility poles damaged and 13 cars smashed, according to local authorities. The uprooted trees and debris are still being cleaned up by the authorities and locals. Hoang Tuan barely escaped a fallen billboard upon driving his motorbike: “I have never witnessed such a sudden and horrendous wind before.”, he told the website VnExpress.

Heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon overflew numerous streets, among them Nguyen Huu Canh Street in Binh Thanh Distric and Thao Dien in District 2.

According to Vietnam News, Deputy General of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Le Thanh Hai the wind force varied between 89 to 102 km/h (55 – 63 mph), which set the record as the strongest wind in Hanoi in the last 30 years.
