Parts of central and eastern Europe have been devastated by blizzards and freezing rain in last couple of days. Cold spell and snowstorms disrupted power supplies, travel and schools… some regions are still cut out from the rest of the world.

Though the snow may have stopped for now – the temperatures are still plunging.

A quarter of homes in Slovenia have been left without electricity after heavy snow and ice caused the collapse of power lines. The Slovenian government said that more than 40 per cent of the country's Alpine forests have been damaged.

Snow even fell in the central Adriatic coast in Croatia, which is highly unusual because the region has a Mediterranean climate. The ice and snow in the seaside town of Šibenik prompted authorities to close down schools there.

In Croatian mountainous region Gorski Kotar winter conditions and freezing rain destroyed 80% of power distribution lines. Freezing rain severely damaged forests and orchards, residents said they have never seen anything like it.

Serbian government minister Aleksandar Antic said that more than 5 000 people have been evacuated in the past few days. Authorities used a military helicopter, tanks and armored vehicles to reach stranded people.

Heavy snow is also falling in neighboring Montenegro, causing road traffic problems.

Four people have died in Bulgaria over the past few days. The army was called out to help unblock roads to villages cut off since last week’s blizzards.

In the southern Austrian province of Carinthia, bordering Slovenia, up to 3 000 homes were without electricity. Two rail routes connecting Austria with Italy were closed.

In southeastern Poland, some 20 villages were cut off by snow drifts.

Some people suggest the current conditions are the first signs of little ice age coming to Europe.
