Major solar flare measuring X1.7 erupted from Region 1882

Following days of increased solar activity newly emerging Active Region 1882 erupted with major solar flare measuring X1.7 on October 25, 2013. The event started at 07:53, peaked at 08:01 and ended at 08:08 UTC.

This region is not in geoeffective position but will be in the coming days.

Potential impacts: area of impact consists of large portions of the sunlit side of Earth, strongest at the sub-solar point. Radio – Wide area blackout of HF (high frequency) radio communication for about an hour.

A Type II and IV radio emissions were associated with the event. Type IV emissions occur in association with major eruptions on the Sun and are typically associated with strong Coronal Mass Ejections and solar radiation storms.

Additionally, a 10cm Radio Burst was registered. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.

Spaceweather reports that today's X1-flare was bracketed by two erupting magnetic filaments, each located hundreds of thousands of kilometers from AR1882. In other words, the X1 flare might have been just one piece of an interconnected global eruption.

There are now three sunspot groups on the Earth side of the Sun capable of strong eruptions: AR1875, AR1877 and AR1882.

ALERT: Type IV Radio Emission
Begin Time: 2013 Oct 25 0804 UTC

Description: Type IV emissions occur in association with major eruptions on the sun and are typically associated with strong coronal mass ejections and solar radiation storms.

***

SUMMARY: 10cm Radio Burst
Begin Time: 2013 Oct 25 0757 UTC
Maximum Time: 2013 Oct 25 0758 UTC
End Time: 2013 Oct 25 0821 UTC
Duration: 24 minutes
Peak Flux: 610 sfu
Latest Penticton Noon Flux: 161 sfu
Description: A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.

Couple of hours earlier, at 03:02 UTC today, AR 1882 erupted with M2.9 solar flare. See the report here.

NOAA SWPC forecasters estimated 55% chance for M-class, and 10% chance for X-class solar flare today.

Update:

At 09:54 UTC the same region, AR 1884, erupted with moderate solar flare reaching M1.0. This is how X-ray graph looked like after X1.7 and M1.0 today:
