The fire map bellow accumulates the locations of the fires detected by MODIS on board the Terra and Aqua satellites over a 10-day period, from July 20  – July 29, 2013. Each colored dot indicates a location where MODIS detected at least one fire during the compositing period. Color ranges from red where the fire count is low to yellow where number of fires is large. The active fire locations represent the center of a 1km pixel that is flagged by the MOD14/MYD14 Fire and Thermal Anomalies algorithm as containing one or more fires within the pixel.

Global 10-day fire maps are generated using the MODIS fire locations to represent the current fire activity around the world.

On July 20, 2013, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this image of the West Mullan fire burning in western Montana. The fire was burning just north of Interstate 90 near the town of Superior. The fire started on July 14. By July 23, it had burned 6,090 acres (2,465 hectares). Eight major wildfires burned through forests and grasslands in the Pacific Northwest in late-July 2013, threatening homes and forcing road closings and evacuations. Many parts of Washington and Oregon faced extreme fire threats, as strong thunderstorms lined up to hit parched forests and grasslands with lightning. On July 28, 2013, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured these images of the Mile Marker 28 fire in the Simcoe Mountains northeast of Goldendale, Washington. Smoke blew east toward Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland. The right image shows a closer view of smoke billowing up from the most active part of the fire. An intense heat wave in central Russia fueled an outbreak of wildfire in the taiga forests of Siberia. NASA’s Aqua/MODIS satellite captured this image of thick smoke from the fires over the Khanty-Mansiyskiy and Yamal-Nenetskiy districts of Russia on July 29, 2013. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fire.
