Several strong solar flares and CME’s seen at farside

At least three large CME clouds were observed during last 24 hours but all of them were at far side so there is no danger for Earth, they are heading away from our planet. Old Sunspot 1564 was probably source of the flares. STEREO Behind COR2 recorded bright flash with Full Halo CME around 15:00 UTC that indicate it could be strong X-class solar flare.

Video below shows a solar prominence off the northwest limb that hurled a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) into space, away from Earth on September 20.

Sunspot 1574 is growing as it approaches the southwest limb. the region grew from a simple unipolar spot to a 4 spot bipolar group. Sunspot 1575 remains the largest visible region on the Earth facing side of the Sun, but is not magnetically complex.

The geomagnetic field was at predominately quiet to unsettled levels with a period of active conditions observed at the end of September 19. The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels with isolated active intervals at September 21-22 as a coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) remains geoeffective.

The solar wind is currently at elevated levels and this may lead to increased geomagnetic activity at very high latitudes.

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a slight chance for M-class activity for the next three days. NOAA/SWPC estimates 15% chances for M-class events.

  1. Wonderful article. I have been having super flares of my own, most notable the begining of the month from about the evening of 9/2/12 till around the 8th…intense pain. Have Chronic Lyme disease, many other lymies I know have also had flare ups with their symptoms. I feel they are related to the solar flares. What we want to know is, what more is coming, and do you have anyway of predicting…we sure could use a heads up, prepare for immobilizing pain. Can’t believe more folks aren’t feeling this. Thank you, for the article and any help you might provide.
