Extremely rare image of a meteor in daylight with bow shock visible
This photograph was taken on the evening of July 30th, 2012 in the vicinity of Walnut Canyon, Flagstaff, Arizona at about 6:15 pm. Captured quite by accident and visible in the 11 o’clock position in the picture. It’s a meteor with it’s bow shockwave clearly visible as a halo riding in front of the object.
The odds of capturing such an image are quite literally, astronomical.

i have seen a similar meteor during daylight it had a fireball with a green tail. Ive seen a few at night looking the exact same i guess fireballs as i am reading the pic does look similar except you cant make out the fire ball. Ive never seen a meteor shower tho thats on my list this summer. The daylight meteor was the first time i saw one and has really got me pumped now finding out how comon they are well its definitly the thing i wish to see most.
On 10/30/2012 saw meteor in late afternoon before dark between 5:15 and 5:30 eleven miles from Evergreen, AL in the Bowles community.
I suspect doz is correct, it appears to be be a lens/camera artifact.
If it were a meteor, there would be a very long smoke/dust trail behind it.
Also, that is not what a bow shock looks like. It would be a roughly parabola, with the greatest concentration of vapor right in front of the object. The one thing it would NOT be is a ring.
I have a picture like this taken on Aug. 27,2012 in Charleston,WV. How do I share it here?
looks like a lens flare from your lens. The sun is just in the right place and so on.. What lens did you use? Can you post full resolution image? I’m sorry, but there is no meteorites in your photo, it is just a lens flare. Just try to take a photo from that exact place at roughly the same time and I bet that you will see this same phenomenon again.
Very cool shot! Ironically I’m into photography and I’m reading again (listening, actually) to an audio book entitled Lucifer’s Hammer. It’s about a comet that slams into Earth and all the excitement afterword.
Thank you Amy. I think I might have used up a bucket full of luck to get this one! :o)
o i think it would bring you a BUNCH of BUCKETS OF GOOD LUCK just cuz you got to be in the vicinity to even see it, much less get a pic of it ♥ that is potent good mojo ♥ way to win, kid
that is aMAZing ♥ great good luck – even just getting to see it virtually ♥
