Magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck area east of South Sandwich Islands on April 17 at 19:03:55 UTC according to USGS. The epicenter was located 563 km (349 miles) E of Bristol Island, 677 km (420 miles) ESE of Visokoi Island, South Sandwich Islands and 2685 km (1668 miles) SE of Stanley, Falkland Islands (59.099°S, 16.693°W) at depth of 1 km (~0.6 mile) (poorly constrained). EMSC registered magnitude 6.0 at depth of 2 km (1.2 miles).
South Sandwich island are unpopulated sub-antarctic islands with a lot of birds and penguins! This kind of earthquakes occur very regularly in this area.
This is the third major M6+ earthquake in 24 hours. M6.7 hit offshore Valparaiso, Chile (32.701°S, 71.484°W) at depth of 37 km (23.0 miles) at 03:50:16 UTC and M6.8 hit Eastern New Guinea, Papua New Guinea (5.474°S, 147.097°E) at depth of 208.2 km (129.4 miles) at 07:13:50 UTC. realmente é preocupante. os dados mostram atividades em todos os cantos do mundo. observa-se também que a profundidade em alguns casos é pequena. será mesmo que algo está ocorrendo com maior itensidade no núcleo e nas camadas adjacentes do globo terrestre? eu creio que sim!
