Aurora Sub-storm March 15/16, 2012 (timelapse and gallery)

The flank of a CME hit Earth’s magnetic field on March 15th around 13:00 UTC. The impact sparked a moderate (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm. Beautifull auroras colored sky into March 16th. Here are some images and great timelapse-movie.

Just outside Edmonton, Alberta, photographer Zoltan Kenwell started day early with aurora display appeared on March 16th. He made a series of short timelapse movies.

Fisheye view of the aurora from 16th March 2012, overlooking Lake Tekapo and Mt John. A very nice aurora display which lasted a couple of hours and reflected in Lake Tekapo, also a few statelite passovers.

Overlooking Lake Tekapo and Mt John at the aurora on the 16th March 2012, a very nice display that lasted a couple of hours. Camera canon 7d with a 24mm f/1.4. Exposure is 15 seconds ISO 3200 f/2, 500 images.

  1. I am astonished but not with the beauty of the photos. I’m astonished because of ignorance of today’s man who is so blind that doesn’t see what it is about. And, it is only one of the sing among many others, the sign of the Earth changes. Please, do not think such things happen for our eyes, they happen because thing in nature are changing. The Changes of the Planet. In which direction is that going to lead us, we’ll see.
    It is beautiful, but that beauty is dangerous. A man should be more careful.

  2. Fantastic photos and I wanted to share them… but, the audio commercial that came on and I could not turn off means that I will not be promoting this particular article to friends. That is too bad as the pictures were some of the best aurora’s I have seen.
