Seismologists and volcanologists are monitoring very carefully the seismic sequence that occured last week in Santorini. While reassuring the scientific community and the Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens, decided to settle on Monday, another five seismographs in the Cycladic island for close monitoring of the phenomenon. The unusual activity recorded in the Thera volcano due to the state of magma that rises from the bottom of the volcano, increasing the pressure on the cone of the crater.

The earthquakes occurring at low intensity, but as scientists explain the focal depth is nearer to the surface of the island and the phenomenon is explained by the rising of magma from the bottom of the volcano which presses the cone of the crater. The volcanic activity is of short duration with a slow progression, but in recent weeks the characteristic rotten egg odor that emits sulfur, which exists in abundance in the subsoil of a volcanic island, sometimes becomes ever more intense. Be reminded that there are three active volcanoes in the Helladic area.Volcanoes of Milos, Santorini and Nisyros.

The islands of Santorini is world unique phenomenon in volcanic caldera. The crescent moon is known as Santorini, Thirasia and Aspronisi forming an imaginary circle in the middle of which is the caldera of Santorini, the largest in the world. The volcano awakened for the first time before 2.5 million years and continued its activity until today. In this long period have occurred 12 very large explosions.Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni formed by underwater eruptions and are the latest pieces of land in the Mediterranean. The formation of New Kameni began 440 years ago with the last pieces of volcanic lava petrified of just over 50 years. The last eruption was in 1950.

3,500 years ago, a terrible eruption of  Thera, which geologists consider as one of the strongest occurring ever changed the course of history ancient peoples of the Mediterranean. When the volcano exploded on the island which, Plato was the lost Atlantis, the tsunami reaching the shores of Crete destroyed the Minoan civilization, which at that time was the leader in the Mediterranean basin. Environmental changes made were felt throughout the world, reaching even into China and possibly North America and Antarctica. In the epic, however, disaster related by some historians and the legend of Atlantis and the Biblical story of the seven plagues of Pharaoh, with the subsequent exodus from Egypt.

Historians and archaeologists appear puzzled as to the date that exploded volcano of Thera with a possible date somewhere between 1645 and 1500 BC There is no evidence about what really happened, but scientists are able to make comparisons of the detailed records of the eruption of Krakatoa volcano famous in Indonesia in 1883. The powerful eruption of Krakatoa killed more than 40,000 people in just few hours, caused a giant tsunami of 12 meters, ejected lava in various parts of Asia, caused a drop in temperature across the globe and created a strange colored sunsets for 3 years. Evidence suggests that the explosion was heard 3,000 miles away. The eruption of Thera was four to five times stronger than that of Krakatoa in accordance with geologists, and the energy corresponds to the simultaneous explosion of atomic bombs on hundreds of milliseconds. […]
