Ash belching from a Vanuatu volcano is an increasing health threat to islanders and their water supplies. The cloud from erupting Mount Yasur has billowed some 1,800 metres high and affected flights in neighbouring New Caledonia.

Tourists have been banned from the scenic spot under persistent bombardment from lava and burning rocks. Government officials have visited the island of Tanna to assess the overall impact of the eruption.

Following the assessment done by the Geohazards team on the 31th May and 01st June, Yasur volcano has maintained its high activity with the strong explosions and ashes/bombs emissions from all the three active vents.

The increasing activity of the Yasur volcano since May 2011 led to upgrade the hazard rating of this volcano at Alert Level 3 starting from June 01, 2011.  Therefore the access to the volcano is now closed and its 500 m surrounding zone is strictly prohibited

Yasur volcano is currently undergoing moderate to large eruption with strong explosions ejecting volcanic bombs reaching the view points for visitors and the parking area with the significant ash fall in the villages nearby. High risk of volcanic projections remains in the red color Zone and threats of ash fall in parts of the yellow color zone that are exposed to trade winds.

At this time, no evacuation of the roughly 6000 inhabitants of the district has to be considered. Information bulletins will be broadcast by Radio Vanuatu to keep the population concerned informed of new developments. (GeoHazards)
