Barrels recovered from Choctaw Creek in Clinton, Arizona did contain a chemical but is not contaminating their water supply. This creek does feed into their county water treatment facility, but the water for the city is safe to drink.
Friday afternoon officials were to test what chemical is in the creek water. Several barrels were marked as “Sta-Foam D.” Others were labeled “ANCO WT-22.” The labels indicate the contents were used as lubricants in natural gas well drilling operations. Two barrels were not marked.
The ADEQ is in contact with the product manufacturer listed on the labels and is now in the process of attempting to identify the responsible party.
Mayor Roger Rory says a fisherman first told him about one barrel two weeks ago. Since then, there have been more barrels reported, culminating in the haz-mat crews fishing them out of the creek Friday morning under the Choctaw Bridge on Highway 65. The crews included officials from the EPA, ADEQ and county officials.
15-20 barrels were pulled from the creek Friday morning which feeds into the water treatment facility. They were found in an area roughly 3 miles of the creek.
Friday afternoon more barrels were found and are being taken out. Rory says he does not believe the barrels were put their on purpose and this could be an accident or related to recent flooding. (TodaysTHV)
